Jesus Heals a Man Born Blind

As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man who had been blind from birth……6 Then Jesus spit on the ground, made mud with the saliva, and spread the mud over the blind man’s eyes. 7 He told him, “Go wash yourself in the pool of Siloam” (Siloam means “sent”). So the man went and washed and came back seeing! John9:1-7 (NLT)
Jesus said to the blind man, “Go wash yourself in the pool of Siloam.” And the blind man obeyed. So he went and washed himself, and he came back seeing.
Now, why did Jesus ask the blind man to do that?
Jesus purposely spit on the mud, applied the mud on his eyes, and asked him to wash. What an insurmountable task! Just having to go wash in the pool of Siloam is a very huge and daunting task for a blind man. The blind man had to seek help from people and was dependent on kind souls to lead him slowly to the pool of Siloam. He could not have gone there on this own; no, he won’t be able to do so. He might stumble or get lost. So he had to seek help from others and work it out on his own, with the help of others.
And the most powerful thing that drove this blind man to work out his healing was his faith…his faith that he will be healed.
Now personally, when I asked to be healed, why was I not healed instantly?
I found that just as in the case above, Jesus did not heal the man instantly. Jesus wanted him to work out his healing. But Jesus had already put the mud on his eyes. Likewise, Jesus has already equipped us to work out our own healing. And the effort required may be a bit daunting. We might have to make sacrifices, be extra disciplined and obedient, be faithful, hardworking, consistent, tenacious, and longsuffering to work out our healing.
Like for me, I had to see the doctor in the hospital, go to the hospital monthly to get medications, and take my medications faithfully everyday. It required sacrifice, and self-discipline. But I got a lot of help from my family members of course! I also had to discipline my mind and choose good, positive thoughts, and think only of the good and praiseworthy things, which God has called me to do. I also had to spend time in the Word and cultivate a strong relationship with God, which is the most important part of my healing. And I am on my way to recovery.
When you start working out your healing, God promises one thing – you will be healed. In the case of the blind man, he obeyed Jesus and washed in the pool of Siloam, and he came back seeing! So Jesus will one day heal us as well…if we obey his call.
